GREEN BOULEVARD

The Green boulevard is a concept of a multi-purpose crossroads in the city of Berlin, connecting inhabitants of the city, history, climate adaptation, flora and fauna. At the site of the Hornstrasse the clash between the Park am Gleisdreieck and a diverged boulevard creates an opportunity to make a hybrid and nature inclusive city space.

This design proposal for the Hornstrasse takes an advantage of the history of the site, where a Boulevard of the 1862 Hobrecht city expansion plan could not be finished in favor of the realization of a rail corridor. In 2013, the rail corridor transformed in the Park am Gleisdreieck and the the original idea opted by Hobrecht became visible.

The Hornstrasse becomes a boulevard linking an open green space to the city which manifests itself at the crossing with the Yorkstrasse. A slim 25-meter tall tower functions as a traditional column-like landmark and viewpoint but also works as an exclamation point for city nature. The new landmark refers to Berliner column structures like the Siegessäule or Friedenssäule and combines the typical tradition of architecture and city building with a modern and eco- and nature friendly future. In the landmark a variety of boxes for animals are included to give space a large variety of species.

Different zones in the street form the background for the needs of the neighbourhood. The green avenue also provides the users with an open square and playground, several quiet closed-off spots and a meeting area complimenting the programme already located in the street. The combination of the ecosystem and the variety of public spaces Transforms the Hornstrasse in a nature inclusive boulevard connecting the park am Gleisdeieck with the Neighboorhood.
